“Local Boy Makes Good”



At age 16, Bernard Wynne won the City of Sierra Madre’s first annual Wistaria Art Contest held in May of 1937. He was awarded a grand prize of $100. He took top honors in a field of 27 competitors, which included many nationally-famed artists.

Ironically, Wynne, a student at Pasadena Junior College, had recently received a “D” in art class because his teacher thought he “lacked imagination.”
